Caritas Internationalis

Lent is here again and with it comes the Lenten Appeal Campaign of the Justice Development and Peace/Caritas (JDPC) Commission. Over the next forty days our Christian observances will be characterized by fasting, almsgiving and most importantly prayers and reconciliation with God. It is a period of introspection and retrospection and a period of stock taking to enable us mend our broken relationships with God our creator. Christ himself left us this example when at the beginning of his ministry he fasted for a whole forty days and forty nights. When we fast it is expected that the proceeds of the fast will be placed at the disposal of those with whom we share a common humanity but who may not be as privileged as we are. It is this principle that forms the bedrock of the Lenten Appeal Campaign.

February 20, 2009 is an important day for all persons in our global village but especially for those of us committed to living the Good News of peace and justice. The World Day of Social Justice is being observed for the first time following its unanimous adoption by the 192 member States of the United Nations during their November 2007 General Assembly. You are invited and asked to share with your members the enclosed prayer for this day. It was developed by members of the USG/UISG Secretariat Commission for Justice Peace and Integrity of Creation in Rome. No dia 20 de fevereiro de 2009 será uma data importante para todos aqueles que pertencem a esta nossa área global, mas terá um significado especial para todos nós e para os que são chamados a empenhar-se pela justiça e a paz, como nos convida a Boa Nova de Jesus de Nazaré. O dia Mundial da Justiça Social será celebrado pela primeira vez após a sua aprovação por unanimidade na Assembléia de novembro de 2007 pelos 192 Estados membros das Nações Unidas. Cordialmente te convidamos para fazer a oração que aqui anexamos, e compartilhá-la com os membros do teu grupo de trabalho ou com a tua comunidade. A oração foi preparada pela Comissão “Justiça, Paz e Integridade da Criação” da USG e da UISG (União respectivamente dos Superiores e das Superioras Gerais) residentes em Roma. Le 20 février, 2009 est un jour important pour tous les gens de notre village global mais surtout pour nous qui sommes engagés à vivre la Bonne Nouvelle de la paix et de la justice. Nous célébrons pour la première fois La Journée Mondiale de la Justice, suite à son adoption unanime par les 192 États membres des Nations Unies lors de leur Assemblée Générale de novembre 2007. Nous vous invitons et vous demandons de partager la prière ci-jointe pour cette journée avec les membres de vos communautés. Il 20 Febbraio 2009 sarà una data importante per tutti quelli che appartengono globalmente a questa nostra area, ma risulta significativo in modo speciale per tutti quelli di noi che sono chiamati ad impegnarsi per la giustizia e la pace, sull’invito espresso dell’Annuncio portato da Gesù di Nazaret. La Giornata Mondiale della Giustizia Sociale sarà celebrata per la prima volta dopo la sua approvazione all’unanimità da parte dei 192 Stati membri delle Nazioni Unite, nell’As-semblea Generale tenutasi nel novembre 2007. T’invitiamo caldamente a voler far tua la preghiera che noi qui alleghiamo, e di attuarla con i membri del tuo gruppo di lavoro o con la tua comunità. Der 20. Februar 2009 ist ein wichtiger Tag für alle in unserem Weltdorf, besonders aber für jene unter uns, die sich verpflichtet haben, die Frohe Botschaft von Frieden und Gerechtigkeit zu leben. Der Welttag der sozialen Gerechtigkeit wird zum ersten Mal gefeiert, nachdem ihn die 192 Mitgliedstaaten der UNO bei ihrer General-Versammlung im November 2007 einstimmig angenommen haben. Wir laden Sie ein und bitten Sie, mit Ihren Mitbrüdern und Mitschwestern das beiliegende Gebet für diesen Tag zu beten. One could easily have been confused about the venue and setting of the most recent meeting of the WHO Executive Board meeting, held in Geneva between 19 and 27 January 2009. Words that are more than familiar to us who are students of Catholic Social Teaching, such as equity, justice, solidarity, participation, abounded in this meeting of medical, scientific, and public health experts, during which technical parlance is usually the “menu of the day”. As a member of the Holy See Delegation to this meeting and also as representative of Caritas Internationalis (CI), I could easily have closed my eyes and dreamed that I was at a lecture on Catholic Social Teaching.
