Gaza stories: “Five hundred families are living in 69 tents”

Muhammad Saleh, living in Al- Rayan Camp receives a blanket from Caritas

Muhammad Saleh, living in Al- Rayan Camp receives a blanket from Caritas

For Gazan refugees, like 56 year old Muhammad Saleh a father of eight, living in tents stirs memories of the tragedy that began 61 years ago, when the 1948 war forced thousands of Palestinians into refugee camps.

“I was a child back then living in Al-Yarmook refugee camp. I know the feeling of returning from school to a tent. I know the feeling of not completely feeling warm or safe and watching his parents struggle to provide food,” he said.

“I really hate to see my children go through the same experience. I lived all my life without having a happy day.”

Tent camps like Al- Rayan are temporary accommodation for the Palestinians who lost their homes after Israel’s three-week assault on the Gaza Strip on Dec. 2008.

“ They have to live through cold and rain. Psychologically they are still afraid,” Khaled Abu Ali, Al- Rayan camp coordinator said.

Because of this women are sent in the evening to stay with friends and family.

Although some aids have been received conditions of life in the camp are uncomfortable.

Caritas staff and volunteers have already distributed 500 hundred blankets to the neediest families. The displaced people living in Izbet Abed Rabo and Al Rayan Camp received 250 blankets, Al Ahli Hospital and The Holy Family School each received 100, and Mother Theresa Nuns received 50.

Khaled thanked Caritas Jerusalem for their efforts to aid the displaced people but pleaded organizations to do more to help because the need is great.

Thoughts on Lent from Caritas Nigeria

February 24, 2009

By Mike Utsaha

Lent is here again and with it comes the Lenten Appeal Campaign of the Justice Development and Peace/Caritas (JDPC) Commission. Over the next forty days our Christian observances will be characterized by fasting, almsgiving and most importantly prayers and reconciliation with God. It is a period of introspection and retrospection and a period of stock taking to enable us mend our broken relationships with God our creator. Christ himself left us this example when at the beginning of his ministry he fasted for a whole forty days and forty nights. When we fast it is expected that the proceeds of the fast will be placed at the disposal of those with whom we share a common humanity but who may not be as privileged as we are. It is this principle that forms the bedrock of the Lenten Appeal Campaign.

Stories from Gaza: “I will die missing you”

February 24, 2009

by Caritas Jerusalem Communication Department

aya3“I was already missing you and now I will die missing you all,” said Jameel Megmas to his wife, son, and daughter Aya.

Jameel had just returned to his family in Gaza from the West Bank after a two year absence. He’d left them because as a Palestinian government civil servant he was relocated to the West Bank when Hamas seized power in Gaza.

One day his daughter Aya called him and told him that she was very scared because of the war. Israeli warplanes and tanks had begun shelled the Gaza Strip in December 2008 in a 22 day military bombardment.

Caritas food gets to Gazans

February 13, 2009

gazablog6“These parcels are something great,” said a Gazan woman as she peaked inside her Caritas food parcel.

“These food items will last for a while. I am really happy to see the flour and sugar but I am so excited to eat the good quality cheese,” she said.

Caritas is distributing 1000 parcels that contain oil, flour, rice, sugar, tea, tomato paste, meat cans, tuna, sardine, spaghetti, lentils, halaweh, beans, chick peas, milk, and tahina. The food is going to 520 Gazan families who had been cut off from supplies because of the conflict between Israel and Palestinian forces linked to Hamas.

World Day of the Sick: Pope Benedict’s message

February 12, 2009

This year we direct our attention particularly to children, the weakest and most defenceless creatures, and, amongst them, to the sick and suffering children. There are little human beings who carry in their bodies the consequences of illnesses which have made them invalids and others who fight against diseases that are now incurable despite the progress of medicine and the care of qualified researchers and health-care professionals.

There are children wounded in their bodies and souls as a consequence of conflicts and wars, and other innocent victims of the hatred of senseless adults. Read more…

Leer…

A meeting at World Health Organization (WHO) or a lecture on Catholic Social Teaching?

February 10, 2009

By Rev. Msgr. Robert J. Vitillo, Head of CI Delegation in Geneva

One could easily have been confused about the venue and setting of the most recent meeting of the WHO Executive Board meeting, held in Geneva between 19 and 27 January 2009. Words that are more than familiar to us who are students of Catholic Social Teaching, such as equity, justice, solidarity, participation, abounded in this meeting of medical, scientific, and public health experts, during which technical parlance is usually the “menu of the day”. As a member of the Holy See Delegation to this meeting and also as representative of Caritas Internationalis (CI), I could easily have closed my eyes and dreamed that I was at a lecture on Catholic Social Teaching.

By Matt Davis, Catholic Relief Services/CRS (Caritas member in the USA)

During the past week I traveled to Gaza to assist with the logistics and coordination of the relief distributions as the first non-Gazan from CRS to gain access since the recent conflict erupted.

It was liberating to finally get into the Gaza and spend a few days with the CRS team; but simultaneously disheartening to witness the devastation first hand –from health clinics, apartment buildings, schools, and mosques to government buildings and individual farm houses. (more…)
