At least 349 people died in the stampede at festivities in Cambodia
Cambodia is struggling to come to terms with tragedy after 349 people were killed in a stampede at their Water Festival celebrations, their biggest celebration of the year.
Most of the victims at Koh Pich Diamond Island disaster on 22 November were women (222 women were killed and 256 women were injured).
On November 23, Caritas Cambodia immediately provided food assistant and drinking water to the injured people in three hospitals of Calmette, Preah Kosamak and Kampuchea Soviet. The injured survivors have received food and drinking water for three times per day.
Caritas hosted a coordination meeting of other ngos in which it was agreed to provide food and water for five days to 400 injured peoples and 400 relative peoples who take care of the patients, plus 100 hospital staff of 5 hospitals.
Caritas Internationalis Secretary General Lesley-Anne Knight sent a message of condolence to Caritas Cambodia, “Please accept our solidarity, prayers and condolences for those who lost their lives and sympathies for those injured. We trust that all concerned in your country would do their best in taking appropriate response to the tragedy.”
