XVII CONGRESO LATINOAMERICANO Y CARIBEÑO DE CARITAS Y IV ENCUENTRO CONTINENTAL DE PASTORAL SOCIAL-CARITAS

Mons.

Caritas Latin America renews its commitment to the poor at regional congress

Poverty and injustice were the over-arching themes discussed at the XVII congress of Latin American and Caribbean Caritas recently.

One hundred and eighty participants gathered to discuss the challenges facing Latin America  and the role Caritas has in these challenges.

They said that damage to the environment and political and social corruption, were the real barriers to development.  This along with displacement and forced migration uproot national identity.

During the congress, delegates expressed their commitment to not letting the suffering of the poor, marginalised and excluded pass by unnoticed. By reflecting on their suffering it moves us and gives us the possibility of recognising those who are crucified today, just as Christ was once crucified.

Testimonies and reflections were shared at the conference which expressed the Caritas identity and mission. A firm commitment was taken to tackle the various challenges which face the Church and its social mission as expressed by Caritas.

“We invite everyone who is part of the Latin America and Caribbean family to continue working to build “an America for everyone” based on love and respect or diversity and where there is a common culture for life and human, spiritual and social progress,” said Bishop Fernando Bargalló, President of Caritas Latin America.

Together with representatives from Caritas Internationalis, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Caritas Spain, Caritas Germany, Secours Catholique and the Latin American Bishops’ Conference, Caritas Latin America renewed its commitment to “making the Kingdom of God a reality where there’s social justice and Christian charity and  where the dignity of human life is respected along with each individual man and woman”.

It also confirmed its commitment to the preferential option for the poor and excluded and to accompanying them in their fight so that they can become the architects of their own development.

Caritas Voices Against Poverty: What can we do to save lives now?

The world has just five years left to reduce poverty and achieve the MDGs.

A reflection on the Millennium Development Goals by Joseph Donnelly

What do you do when you lose everything?
What do you do when you lose everything all at once, in a flash, a nano-second?
What do you do?

Questions come to mind in all kinds of ways and places – for us, for me. Just happened this afternoon in NY in the sunny shadows of the UN General Assembly as summer blooms here. Large chunk of afternoon research, reflection, checking notes, updates with colleagues, calls with diplomats. Tied it all together into an MDG UPDATE as the first-half of 2010 has passed us now.

Suddenly – it was gone, totally vanished, no longer an option.
I can start again, as I am attempting right now, but it’s not the same.
Notes already torn up, fresh details merging now with other thoughts, distracted. Continue reading

Caritas voices against poverty No. 4

By Joseph Donnelly, Caritas Internationalis Permanent Delegate to the UN

MDG2010 Summit was conceived as a significant opportunity to galvanize commitments, address past promises toward urgent implementation and reignite global, regional and national actions to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.

The Millennium Development Goals are a series of anti-poverty targets.

Part of the UN’s planning for the MDG2010 Summit in September began months ago when the President of the 64th General Assembly was asked to convene “Informal Interactive Hearings of the General Assembly with non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations and the private sector.”

Making sure children under five survive and prosper is just one of the Millennium Development Goals.

By Joseph Donnelly, Caritas Internationalis Permanent Delegate at the UN

As the UN’s MDG2010Summit gains increasing attention toward September, the priority issues for CARITAS remain precisely the same around the world. Eradicate suffering more and more everyday – to SAVE LIVES NOW!

End poverty.Stop the scandal of hunger in a world of plenty.

Educate all children all the time everywhere.

Support & protect girls & women as equal human beings.

Reduce the deaths of children under five years old.

Improve health for all mothers.

Fight HIV/AIDS, malaria & dreaded diseases.

Ensure safe environments, resources & water.

Develop global development partnerships.

Our Caritas call to action has been on the agenda before the MDGs. Our investments in the lives of others are a constant. Our commitments attempt to match the heroic courage of men and women. Our collective resources multiply for the common good. We keep working at this, near and far, as our primary call: Respect for people! Protection of civilians! SAVE LIVES NOW! Continue reading

Caritas voices against poverty No:1

By Joseph Donnelly, Head of Caritas Delegation at UN headquarters in New York

Ten years ago 189 Member States found themselves seized at the United Nations turn of the century meetings. Seized by the vast, grave social and economic needs, and injustices, around the world.

In a somewhat surprising, resounding manner they seemed to use their national and global power to speak truth, to state details, to the world and each other. They made promises and investments which invited all peoples and all governments into their Millennium Declaration agenda.

It was a unique moment, a promising momentum. They said it. They signed it. They shared it. They did it! What a way to embrace the 21st Century. Beyond predictable rhetoric, hopes were ignited. We chased that flame! Continue reading
