European Development Days

Lesley-Anne Knight at the EU Development Days conference

By Alain Rodríguez García, Caritas Europa

Lesley-Ann Knight, Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis , delivered a speech yesterday during the Opening Session of the 5th edition of the European Development Days that are being hold in Brussels on 6-7 December.

Ms. Knight shared the floor with a series of European and international personalities such as Belgium’s Prime Minister Yves Letterme, European Commission President Joao Manuel Barroso, European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Nepal’s Prime Minister Madhav Kumar.

Starting with a clear reminder of Caritas’ preferential option for the poor, Ms. Knight talked about the dire reality in which the have-nots are living across the world. She mentioned the fact that 50% of global migration is composed of women and girls, who face terrible dangers when attempting to reach the dream of a better life. She also reminded the forum that poverty is everywhere, even in the richest of the countries such as the United States, Japan and the European Union (EU). Continue reading

The World Social Forum process

The WSF process was launched in 2001 as a counterpoint to the Davos World Economic Forum to enable social organisations, and more broadly civil society, to develop alternative reflections around the idea that “another world is possible”. The initiative was undertaken by Brazilian organisations, including the Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace. It was supported from the outset by international organisations, including Caritas Internationalis, which is still a member of the International Council of the World Social Forum. Continue reading

Land reform in Brazil: are we nearly there yet?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

English |Spanish

By Angela Page

More than 500,000 people voted in the popular plebiscite to ‘Limit Land Ownership in Brazil’ supported by Caritas and 52 other organisations throughout the country.

According to results released by the National Forum for Agrarian Reform and Justice in the Countryside (FNRA) a respectable 519,623 Brazilians took part.

So, what´s it all about? Between 1 and September 12, Brazilian society was given the opportunity to answer “Yes” or “No” to the following questions: “Do you agree that there should be a maximum limit for large land holdings in Brazil?” and “Do you agree that limiting large land holdings in Brazil is a way of helping increase the production of healthy food and improving living conditions in rural and urban areas?”

“En Cristo construyendo una América para todos”

XVII CONGRESO LATINOAMERICANO Y CARIBEÑO DE CARITAS Y IV ENCUENTRO CONTINENTAL DE PASTORAL SOCIAL-CARITAS

Mons.

Caritas Latin America renews its commitment to the poor at regional congress

Poverty and injustice were the over-arching themes discussed at the XVII congress of Latin American and Caribbean Caritas recently.

One hundred and eighty participants gathered to discuss the challenges facing Latin America  and the role Caritas has in these challenges.

They said that damage to the environment and political and social corruption, were the real barriers to development.  This along with displacement and forced migration uproot national identity.

During the congress, delegates expressed their commitment to not letting the suffering of the poor, marginalised and excluded pass by unnoticed. By reflecting on their suffering it moves us and gives us the possibility of recognising those who are crucified today, just as Christ was once crucified.

Testimonies and reflections were shared at the conference which expressed the Caritas identity and mission. A firm commitment was taken to tackle the various challenges which face the Church and its social mission as expressed by Caritas.

“We invite everyone who is part of the Latin America and Caribbean family to continue working to build “an America for everyone” based on love and respect or diversity and where there is a common culture for life and human, spiritual and social progress,” said Bishop Fernando Bargalló, President of Caritas Latin America.

Together with representatives from Caritas Internationalis, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Caritas Spain, Caritas Germany, Secours Catholique and the Latin American Bishops’ Conference, Caritas Latin America renewed its commitment to “making the Kingdom of God a reality where there’s social justice and Christian charity and  where the dignity of human life is respected along with each individual man and woman”.

It also confirmed its commitment to the preferential option for the poor and excluded and to accompanying them in their fight so that they can become the architects of their own development.
