By Lesley-Anne Knight, Caritas Internationalis Secretary General

The week-long Caritas Internationalis General Assembly begins next Sunday 22 May with over 300 delegates from national Caritas member organisations arriving in Rome. We are privileged to have many important guests, including the Secretary of State of the Holy See, His Eminence Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone S.D.B., who will be concelebrating our opening Mass as part of the 60th anniversary festivities for the Caritas confederation. We will have the special joy of an audience and blessing from the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI on the last day of the Assembly.

As part of the 60th anniversary celebrations, Vatican officials, ambassadors to the Holy See, Caritas representatives, supporters and train enthusiasts will be taking part in a special event on the eve of the General Assembly. An historic steam locomotive will be taking them in vintage carriages from the Vatican train station to Orvieto and back, all in aid of our humanitarian work. We are saying a really big thank you to the Governatorato of the Vatican City and Ferrovie dello Stato (the Italian State Railway System) for making this happen for us.

Available in Spanish and in French

One of the huge privileges of my job as Secretary General of a world-wide confederation is to be able to visit our member organisations around the world and experience at first-hand how our Church embraces so many diverse cultures.

This February I was in Edmonton, Canada with our national Caritas organisation, Development and Peace. I joined their Director Michael Casey, our Caritas Internationalis President Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga and Archbishop Richard Smith at his cathedral, the Basilica of St Joseph, to speak on international development and social injustice.

Haiti mourns its loss one year after quake

Cardinal Robert Sarah, president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, assured Haitians on the one-year anniversary of the Port-au-Prince earthquake that they are not alone in their sufferings. Photo by Alsy Acevedo/CRS

Homily of Cardinal Robert Sarah, President of Pontifical Council Cor Unum

Port-au-Prince, Haiti

(Hebrews 2:14-18; Psalms 105:1-2, 3-4, 8-9; Mark 1:29-39)

Cher tout people Haïtien:

Moin poté la pé ak Ké Kontan Gran Mèt la pou nou.

Dear Haitian people,

I bring you the peace and joy of the Lord.

Exactly one year after the devastating earthquake that struck this dear country of Haiti, I come to you on behalf of the Holy Father. Through my presence, Pope Benedict XVI wishes to demonstrate his nearness to you. We are still in mourning for thousands of people who were dear to us: children, parents, brothers and sisters, as well as priests, religious and seminarians, including our Father and Brother, Monsignor Joseph Serge Miot, Archbishop of Port-au-Prince. All of these victims loved life just as much as we do. They lost it full of fear and in great pain. Some of them had family ties with you, and you are still mourning them. In an instant, many thousands of you lost all your possessions and today still don’t know how to plan a future life. Many remarkable buildings and monuments, some of them religious, lie in ruins. I’m thinking in particular of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, which once stood in the very place we are gathered today. Sickness and death continue to strike you. The joy of living seems to have been shattered by this tragedy caused by a natural disaster, and not by a divine curse. Continue reading

Martin Largo, Caritas Espana

Martin Lago

Continue reading

The next World Social Forum will be held in Dakar from 6 to 11 February 2011

The World Social Forum process

The WSF process was launched in 2001 as a counterpoint to the Davos World Economic Forum to enable social organisations, and more broadly civil society, to develop alternative reflections around the idea that “another world is possible”. The initiative was undertaken by Brazilian organisations, including the Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace. It was supported from the outset by international organisations, including Caritas Internationalis, which is still a member of the International Council of the World Social Forum. Continue reading

Land reform in Brazil: are we nearly there yet?

By Angela Page

More than 500,000 people voted in the popular plebiscite to ‘Limit Land Ownership in Brazil’ supported by Caritas and 52 other organisations throughout the country.

According to results released by the National Forum for Agrarian Reform and Justice in the Countryside (FNRA) a respectable 519,623 Brazilians took part.

So, what´s it all about? Between 1 and September 12, Brazilian society was given the opportunity to answer “Yes” or “No” to the following questions: “Do you agree that there should be a maximum limit for large land holdings in Brazil?” and “Do you agree that limiting large land holdings in Brazil is a way of helping increase the production of healthy food and improving living conditions in rural and urban areas?”

Letter from Rome October 2010

Change has been in the air in Rome in October, with autumnal weather and new appointments. Caritas Internationalis warmly congratulated His Eminence Cardinal-elect Robert Sarah on his appointment to the College of Cardinals and as President of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum. We look forward to renewed and fruitful collaboration with Cor Unum under his leadership.

Rome hosted the Middle East Synod of Bishops this month, where Church leaders discussed the unique difficulties facing this fragile region. Delegates included representatives of Caritas Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and the Caritas Middle East and North Africa (MONA)  President,  Joseph Farah. The propositions adopted  by the Synod Fathers show real hope in unity that there is a way out of the conflict which overshadows so much of daily life there. “Peace is possible”, as the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI said in his closing address. Book launch for La Justice dans la peau

By Éric Fottorino, directeur Le Monde

Desclée de Brouwer, a well-known French Catholic publisher, has launched a new book ‘LA JUSTICE DANS LA PEAU: Géopolitique de l’action humanitaire’ by Denis Viénot, the previous president of Caritas Internationalis. Below is an extract from the the preface in English, French and Spanish.

There is a “people” who exist, who totally disrupt the relations between force and justice. It is composed of men, women and children who are weak because they live in miserable conditions and suffer from hunger. And yet, they find strength in their energy and from the certainty of their own innate sense of justice. When a catastrophe occurs, they find themselves in the midst of the rubble. When war breaks out, they advocate reconciliation, and they hold their heads high.

“This is the grim and compelling account presented by Denis Viénot throughout these pages which are a series of voyages to the very heart of the human condition. Whether he is in Iraq or Romania, in the womens prison in Riga, in Lebanon or South America, in Uganda, or elsewhere on this suffering planet, Denis Viénot is on the side of the weak, of children and their mothers, and of society’s rejects, victims of the silent violence born of extreme poverty, the neglect of the major powers when they choose self-interest over sharing and showing compassion. […] Almost imperceptibly, these pages demonstrate a profound reflection on the meaning of what is just, on nobleness and the limits of humanitarian action, with the idea that suffering should always be taken into account, that the stronger party, the hand that gives, is not there to subjugate the hand that receives. This is also the lesson of this book. We are enriched by the contact with those who have nothing”.

Denis Viénot was General Secretary of Secours catholique / Caritas France from 1991 to 1998, President of Caritas Europa from 1999 to 2005 and President of Caritas Internationalis from 2005 to 2007.Desclée de Brouwer, Paris

ISBN: 978-2-220-06195-5

Davos Blog 2: a focus on values

By Lesley-Anne Knight, Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis

Last year at Davos an absence of values within society – and especially within the business world – was identified as a key contributory factor behind the global financial crisis. In the words of some commentators, it was as much a crisis of values as an economic crisis.

This year the focus on values has continued as participants seek to identify the values that are lacking in society and, more importantly, how they can be implemented.

As a part of this process, I was invited along with representatives of other world religions to contribute to a special publication entitled “Faith and the Global Agenda: Values for the Post Crisis Economy”. The publication was officially launched at a press conference in Davos on Thursday at which I was joined by fellow contributors the Archbishop of Munich, Dr Reinhard Marx; Jim Wallis, President and CEO of Sojourners; Justice Muhammad Taqi Usmani from Pakistan. The press conference was chaired by John J DeGioia President of Georgetown University who collaborated with the World Economic Forum in the production of the report.

Discussion on values was kicked off at a session on the opening day of the meeting in a forum on “Rethinking Values in the Post-Crisis World” which highlighted how individual economic incentives and short-term motivations had overwhelmed responsibility to the common good, eroding trust.
