Pope presence in Lebanon lit candle for peace

Pope Benedict XVI said he had gone to Lebanon and to the Middle East as a “pilgrim of peace”. Over the next three days, he would return to the same theme of peace in the troubled region in every speech he delivered.

President of Caritas Lebanon Father Simon Faddoul, reflecting on the visit, said, “The Pope was a messenger of peace to an area that is in a state of continuous war. His presence in Lebanon could bring conflicting parties closer.”

The Pope came to deliver the Apostolic Exhortation – the fruit of the Synod for the Middle East.
“In this Exhortation, the Pope invites the Christians to act as citizens of the land by living out their citizenship fully,” said Fr Faddoul. “And invites the Muslims to accept differences in multi-religious societies.”

The pope’s visit served as a showcase for Lebanon, which for years was a model of peaceful coexistence and religious freedom in the Middle East.

The show of enthusiasm for the Pope across sectarian and political lines, in a nation still recovering from the 1975-90 civil war, was a dramatic statement of unity to the outside world and to the Lebanese themselves.

“His visit to Lebanon means a lot to the Christians of the area whose number amounts to around 17 millions. It boosts their morale and will make them feel looked after by their ultimate head of the Church,” said Fr Faddoul. “He conveyed a message of love, peace and reconciliation to non-Christians on one hand, and a call to unification and working together for all Christians so their witness will be one of communion and love.

The pope twice the deplored the human cost of the civil war in neighboring Syria. At a Mass on the last day, he said, “Sadly, the din of weapons continues to make itself heard. Violence and hatred invade people’s lives, and the first victims are women and children.”

“His presence gave true witness to God’s love in front of millions of non-Christians and Christians alike,” said Fr Faddoul.

In his personal statement for one of the universities, my 17 year old grandson wrote, “A Palestinian Christian from Jerusalem, I was born close to the birth of the Oslo Peace Accord, and grew up with the hope of a just solution and prosperity. I witnessed the disappointing collapse of the peace talks, and now, I will graduate from high school under the cloud of a political stalemate and internal Palestinian strife ”.

To read a statement of a young man with his future ahead of him, commencing with hope and ending with uncertainty, a sentiment shared by all Palestinians, made me realize the immense need of solidarity with the Palestinian people. And where else to look other than towards the United Nations, a bastion of justice and a refuge of those with just causes. Continue reading

Reflections on Middle East Synod

By Joseph Donnelly, Caritas Internationalis

Icons are an extraordinary gift. These sacred paintings are reflections of scripture, inspired through the centuries. Icons invite us to look carefully beyond what is most obvious – and to hear God’s Word. An ecclesiastical synod is a truly iconic moment. A chance to enter into communities on their respective pilgrimages.

One year ago, it was announced that a special assembly would come together as a Synod on the Middle East. On October 10, the first-ever Synod on the Middle East opened in Rome. Yesterday, this historic assembly closed in St. Peter’s Basilica with a solemn liturgy for the region.

The theme of the meeting was ‘The Catholic Church in the Middle East: Communion and Witness.’ To speak of the Middle East is to consider countless images. To speak of the Catholic Church and the Christians in the Middle East is to consider rich traditions as well as great suffering.

From the birthplace of Christianity where today hope and hardship dwell side by side, 185 Synod fathers had come. The Synod also included 70 experts from organisations that could advise the Synod. They included representatives of Caritas Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon, as well as the Caritas Mona Regional President Joseph Farah. Continue reading

Palestinian solidarity day

The Separation Barrier dividing Palestinians and Israelis

In 1977, the General Assembly called for the annual observance of 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. On that day, in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine.

As part of the observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on 29 November, Caritas Jerusalem made this statement.

Today, as we observe the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinians, we remember the dispossession and displacement of thousands of Palestinian families as a result of the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. For 62 years, Palestinians have been deprived of their inalienable right to self-determination and a Palestinian State has not yet seen light. The 1967 occupation of the West Bank and Gaza has deepened the suffering and pain of the Palestinians and numerous political efforts and initiatives came to pass over the past decades, to no avail, and the situation in the Palestinian Territories is increasingly troubling.

No friend of the Israelis and the Palestinians can fail to be saddened by the continuing tension between your two peoples. No friend can fail to weep at the suffering and loss of life that both peoples have endured,” said Pope Benedict on the last day of his pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

If earlier parts of Pope Benedict’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land had edges of tension, Thursday’s Mass in Nazareth was relatively short on controversy. Thirty thousand people strong, it had the feel of World Youth Days: the gasp as the popemobile enters, the waving banners, the cheers of “Long live the pope!” Teenagers spent the night or arrived hours early at an amphitheater on Mount Precipice, overlooking the city where Jesus was a teenager too. Some of the children and teens had painted their faces gold and white, the Vatican colors; many wore T-shirts made for the day. The adults sat sedately; the young people moved restlessly, adjusting their papal-insignia scarves, leaning expectantly for a glimpse of the pope, or hoisting their flags higher.

‘Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,’ the well-worn Robert Frost quote goes, and that something was me on Wednesday. Wandering around Bethlehem’s eerily empty streets in the heat, I was unable to leave the city after a day of papal events because a very large slab of concrete was blocking my way.

“Good energy there,” my CRS coworker commented as we left a church celebration for Pope Benedict today. The young Palestinian seminarians, elderly nuns, and magenta-robed prelates in the church were clearly thrilled to be seeing the pope in person. Praying and singing hymns in several languages, the congregation waved gold-and-white Vatican flags as they waited for Benedict to arrive. Sometimes the seminarians—many in their teens—would spontaneously break into the chant of “Benvenuto Benedetto!”

Pope in the Holy Land: Healing words

Pope Benedict surprised many commentators when, just minutes after stepping off his plane in Tel Aviv, he called for a homeland for both Israelis and Palestinians. Many expected, and applauded, his strong denunciation of anti-Semitism. But few expected him to bring up the issue of Palestinian statehood so quickly.

Pope in the Holy Land: The way the wind blows

Sunday was a pretty good day for kite-flying in Jerusalem, but not perfect. Clear blue skies and a decent wind, but something contrary in it wouldn’t always cooperate. Outside the walls of the Old City, the kids would hold their kites high, test the wind, jump up, and hope for the best. About half the time the kites made it, and when they did, they soared gloriously over the walls.
